Ferrán Martínez: Tips for entrepreneurs, from an entrepreneur

Ferrán Martínez is the most successful player in the history of the Spanish ACB League, with seven Championships and two "Copa del Rey" -King's Cup-. In addition, is the only European winner of all the continental titles, since he won the Euroleague, the Cup Winners Cup and the Korac Cup trophies. After retiring, he redirected his career to enterprise and entrepreneurship and now published his fourth book, The Alchemy of prosperity, edited by Uranus.

Question: in your new book you mention that times of crisis are ideal for changes and that it is time for the venture. Do you think that there is a firm commitment of the institutions by entrepreneurs?

Answer: Although they claim otherwise, I do not think that we should expect too much from the institutions. What is a reality is that young entrepreneurs are highly qualified and have global vision, especially young people, who have good ideas and know how to carry them out. It is in crisis when changes occur, and now we are living this process that will undoubtedly be very positive.

Q: You are an entrepreneur of  Lánzame Capital, an incubator for start ups of technological basis. What is the first advice that would give someone who is thinking about to undertake?

A: For example, to make a good market research, who knows who sells and that sells, having the open mind (ability to view other lines of business), that plan and always simulate the worst scenarios, and above all, to surround himself with the best possible workers. Having a good team is very important for success. Partners do not have to contribute only money, can bring you talent, get involved, believe in the project, or open many doors.

Q: In the book you speak of the importance of the small things and, at the same time, of thinking big, what you mean?

A: It is a very practical concept: the small details make the difference, and produce major changes. It should seek simplicity and take into account costs and control of them, but at the same time, set high goals and be open to challenges. So the illusion is very important and view that you want to be, try to innovate and do different things.

Q: Do you think that, given the Economic scene, there are reasons for optimism?

A: There are reasons for optimism, we have to see on the problems, opportunities. We ourselves who must invent the future, so not worth complaining about the situation of crisis we are experiencing, and if we focus on how get the better of us in moments of pressure as the current ones.

Q: Your latest book is called The Alchemy of prosperity, is there a formula?

A: The formula each has, is just a matter of rethinking certain things and see what really matters. To improve it must first stumble, sports has taught me. Every entrepreneur should be able to overcome the adversities that surely will be, and adapt quickly to change. If our grandparents, with far fewer resources and in worst situations "got ahead" with effort and sacrifice, finding happiness in small things important, how are not going to be able to us do so?

Q: Also you have written another book about the utility of zen in the company. What brings you to you?

A: While I was competing, I used zen unconsciously, as the invisible training, visualization techniques, techniques of breathing to find the concentration in many pressure situations (end of Championships, or play you the winning shot at the end of a match, etc.). All this is clearly applicable to your personal and professional life and gives you balance. Zen is like sports, since it is based on practice and intuition, just like in the business world.

Q: After four books, you are considering writing a fifth?

A: Sure I will write more books since I enjoy writing. I always travel with a computer in tow and take my travel to do so. In fact, I'm already working on a new project.

Addiction to work does not mean more working efficiency

A study conducted by the UNED in 180 Spanish entrepreneurs, has shown that those who spend many hours work per week not only not get better results, but are even worse. And however, entrepreneurs passionate with their work but that they don't arrive to become obsessed with it, get more positive results.

According to the Servicio de Información y Noticias Científicas, data from the study - in which also participated the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (Netherlands) - confirm that work addiction can cause conflicts with family, partner, worsen health and well-being and increase labour errors.

The authors of the research differed between entrepreneurs workaholics and entrepreneurs involved with it. The main difference is that the second ones work with passion, but are not obsessed, manage to disconnect and get positive emotions from their work.

However, the workaholics are never satisfied with any results, can not stop thinking in their work environment (even in his spare time), devote more hours to your business which should and do not feel emotions positive with a job well done: when you feel negative emotions, these in turn affect the growth of the business and his possible success.

For the authors of the work, the challenge is to convert work addiction into a positive passion. And this can be done with a pleasant working environment, in which both managers and employees can put into practice their skills and be creative without the fear to be sanctioned for errors.

The study, published in the Journal of Managerial Psychology, is available in its online edition:
